Like most subcultures, yaoi existed within a small Internet bubble, mostly populated by other isolated obsessives. Yaoi in America is actually a meshing of two separate subcultures: obviously, the Japanese yaoi comics ('no climax, no point, no meaning') and the slash fiction phenomenon that started in the 90's and saw Kirk and Spock homoerotically plunging one another. with a dash of bestiality, rape and incest thrown in to make it as spicy as it is sweet. It's the platonic ideal of gay love as feverishly imagined by the introverted thirteen year old schoolgirl.
This is the strange world of yaoi, a subculture primarily pandering to women and young girls who like to read the adventures of androgynous boys violently buggering each other, then lying in each other's arms, blubbering about their love.
